About ESRU
Welcome to the belgian site of the ESRU. Here you will find some interesting information of what ESRU does in Europe and Belgium. You'll also discover the original agreement between ESRU and EAU on cooperation.
The European Society of residents in Urology (ESRU) was founded in 1991 as the body representing the trainees in urological surgery within the European Union and its associated countries. From the start in 1991 until the beginning of 1996 the name of the organization was "European Board of Urologists in Training (EBUT)". The ESRU is an independent organization working in close cooperation with the European Board of Urology (EBU) and the European Association of Urology (EAU) in matters concerning the training and education of residents in urology. The ESRU is based upon work done by residents, which are grouped in the ESRU- Board.
The objectives of the ESRU are to ensure that optimal urological care will be rendered to the European people in the future. Therefore the objectives of the ESRU are:
· to support training in urology in Europe
· to closely collaborate with the EBU, the EAU and other recognised organisations.
· to organize congresses and workshops for urologists in training.
· to maintain a representation in the EBU and in organisations, which are involved in urological training in Europe.
· to support the creation of national associations for urologists in training in Europe.
The activities of the ESRU include:
· representation of the views, ideas and needs of the European urological residents in urology in various fora, such as the EBU, the EAU and the medical industry.
· supporting the different national organizations of urological trainees, and supporting the foundation of such organizations in countries where they do not yet exist.
· editing an up-dated document on the ESRU' s view of good urological training and collecting information about the present training situation for the European urological residents.
· organizing exchanges between trainees in different countries.
· promotion of educational courses and material directed to urological trainees, if possible free of charge for the individual trainee.
· organization of the annual International Meeting of the European Society of Residents in Urology, which provides a forum for scientific and social interaction between trainees.
· bringing together trainees who may have mutual research, professional or social interests.
· maintaining an updated Internet site for the spread of information to the European trainees
· facilitating the contact among trainees and between trainees and various institutions.
The member countries of the ESRU correspond to the member countries of the EBU, which is one of the boards of the 'Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS) and thereby the official body of urologists in the European Union. In addition to the EU member countries, the UEMS has accepted a number of countries as full members which makes them eligible to be represented in the EBU and ESRU as full members. Countries which are associated members of the UEMS have the possibility to become associated members of the ESRU.
At present the following 30 countries are represented as full members or associated members of the ESRU:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Malta, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Turkey,
Each country may send two representatives (National Communication Officers - NCO's) to the ESRU Board. In the vast majority of the member countries, teh NCO's are elected by the national urological trainees' organization. In a few countries, where no such national organization exists, the national urological association proposes the NCO's. The ESRU Board meets twice a year. In addition to the NCO's, invited trainees from non-member countries are frequently present at the committee meetings.
For some of the most important objectives of the ESRU, there are specific NCO's responsible for the organization of the work. These are the Exchange Officer, the Education Officer and the Internet Officer.
The Executive Committee of the ESRU is in charge of organizing and coordinating the activities of the ESRU. The members of the Executive Committee are the Chairman, the Chairman elect, the Secretary, the Treasurer and the past Chairman. The ESRU Executive Committee is represented in the EBU and in the EAU.
Visiting an urological department in another country is of great value for trainees. The experience of urological practice in a different health care system and the establishment of international contacts will give impact on the trainees' future work, and facilitate the development of a strong European urological professional community. The ESRU has for several years organized an exchange programme for residents. Since 1997 the ESRU is working in close collaboration with the EAU and the European Urological Scholarschip Programme (EUSP) regarding the exchanges. The ESRU organizes the exchanges, acting as an intermediary between the trainees and the departments willing to host them, while the EAU and the EUSP are responsible for the funding of the exchanges. The programme primarily offers exchanges for a few weeks, but also for longer periods, and stimulates bilateral exchanges. Any urological trainee interested in visiting a foreign department should contact his of hers national ESRU NCO or try to find a suitable post at the ESRU internet site.
The ESRU Internet Homepage is the nave in the wheel of many of the activities of ESRU. At this site (www.esru.info), there is information about a large number of topics of current interst for urological trainees, such as various ESRU activities, meetings, courses, the ESRU exchange programme, the national representatives of the ESRU, the national organizations of urological trainees, and lots of links to other sites of interests.
Every year the ESRU arranges the International Meeting of the ESRU, in conjunction with the EAU meeting. These meetings are for trainees only and consist of slected state-of-the-art lectures given by prominent professors and specialists, oral and poster presentations of research performed by trainees, and workshops on clinical topics.
ESRU is a regulatory organisation representing the entirety of urological residents across Europe. The goals and objectives are stated in the ESRU statutes. The strategic alliance will enable both parties involved to strengthen their presence amongst residents in Europe. This will enable ESRU to fulfil the growing administrative demands (e.g. ESRU Scientific Meeting).
Points approved by both organisations:

This includes organisation of the ESRU Scientific Meeting (announcements, registration, abstract processing, contacting presenters, congress facilities, program – abstract book etc.). The Exec. Comm. Any other tasks the ESRU would like to delegate to the ESRU administrative person (e.g. printed matters, brochures) can also be handled there.
